Did you know that the Italian Ministry for Agriculture lists more than 850 different grape varieties which are used for wine production in Italy? This is a country rich in wine heritage; but to the uninitiated it can seem bewildering and unfamilar. Our 4 week Italian wine tour will break down the country in to four geographical areas; helping you make sense of Italy as the Italians do: region by region.
In the North we will taste Italy's most revered reds, the indomitable Barolo, Barbaresco and Amarone, and uncover a great tradition of sparkling wines- from the famous Prosecco to the jealously guarded secrets of Franciacorta. Discover how landscapes dominated by the Alps and the Dolomites give rise to wines of incredible freshness and complexity. Taste crisp and zingy white made around Lake Garda (Lugana) and Roero.
In Central Italy we meet Sangiovese, a grape variety which produces the much misunderstood Chianti (Silence of the Lambs has a lot to answer for!) yet also the prized Brunello di Montalcino. On the coast around Bolgheri we will learn the story of the maverick Super-Tuscan producers, who broke with centuries of tradition by planting French grape varieties, but created stunning wines in the process. New varieties such as Verdicchio and Vernaccia await us here too.
And finally to the sun-drenched South, the wines here are robust and fruity, increasingly well-made and often relatively underpriced. We will taste the best Campania, Puglia and Sicilly has to offer: juicy Primitivo, intense Aglianico, chocolatey Nero di Troia and aromatic whites such as Falanghina.
A series of four tastings guarenteed to open your eyes to the treasure trove of wines which Italy has to offer.
Week 1- Tues 5th June - North West Italy (including Barbaresco, Gavi di Gavi, Franciacorta, Barbera)
Week 2- Tues 12th June - North East Italy (including Lugana, Soave Classico, Prosecco, Valpolicella, Amarone)
Week 3- Tues 19th June - Central Italy (including Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, Vernaccia di San Gimignano)
Week 4- Tues 26th June - The South (including Aglianico, Primitivo, Greco di Tufo, Nero di Troia)
Important Information: £50 is the price to sign up to the course, a further £10 is payable each evening you attend.
