Iberian Adventure 4 wk course (YORK)
Travel to the land of flamenco, tapas, siestas, sangria and sunshine! Spain and Portugal have some of Europe's best value for money wines around. In addition to well-loved classics like Rioja, Port, Cava and Vinho Verde we'll be tasting some of the wines coming out of up and coming regions like Jumilla, we'll be learning about new grape varieties like Bobal and seeing how a new generation of winemakers is pushing Iberian wines to a new and exciting level. There is so much to taste and enjoy in these four weeks...
Such is the range and diversity of winemaking styles in Spain and Portugal that we are going to taste the wines in groups where they are stylistically similar. This means that we'll be comparing the white wines of Rias Baixas (Albarino) with those of Penedes and Portugal, rather than looking at region individually. This sort of tasting helps people to practice their tasting skills and get to grips with the range of different styles which are sweeping through this area at the moment. The evenings will be:
Week 1: Terrific Tempranillo and other Classic Reds including Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Touriga Nacional in the Douro
Week 2: Great Garnacha and other New Wave Reds including Priorat, La Mancha, Monastrell in Jumilla and Bobal
Week 3: Whites including Albarino, Vinho Verde, Rioja Blanco, Penedes
Week 4: Oddities including a selction of the finest Fortified wines (Port, Sherry, Madeira), organic Cava, sweet wines
Laura will be teaching Wine and Spirits qualifications in central Spain in August, so you can expect to taste some goodies gathered on the trip. It promises to be a unique and fascinating vinous adventure.
