Wonderful World of Wine - Chile & Argentina (Sheffield)
Welcome to South America evening! Both of these countries produce some of the most popular wines around at the moment, and we will enjoy a great selection tonight. Chile has concentrated on, and excelled at, producing fresh, fruity, soft wines at temptingly affordable prices- and our heaving supermarket shelves are testament to their success. Meanwhile Argentina has been quietly working away on some seriously robust, intense and complex reds from the Malbec grape which are now amongst the most popular wine in the UK.
Part 1: Chile
Chile can do it all: from fresh vibrant Sauvignon Blancs which combine the elegance of Loire with the racy fruit of New Zealand, to silky smooth, chocolatey Cabernet Sauvignon. It can also boast that its 'own' variety, Carmenere, which it has resurrected after its destruction in Bordeaux over 160 years ago. Today, Carmenere is producing juicy, plump reds with bags of autumnal fruit flavours- yummy! In Chile they are quick to trumpet new, cooler sub-regions such as Bio Bio and Limari where aromatic varieties such as Riesling and Gewurztraminer are thriving: Chile really can do it all!
Part 2: Argentina
Until recently you had to search a little harder to find a great selection of Argentinian wine, much of what they make is consumed in Argentina itself and North America. Many of its wineries are tiny, boutique operations who do not produce enough wine to make it worth exporting. But in the last couple of years we have been treated to a glorious selection of reds, often Malbec based. When grown up in the foothills of the Andes, Malbec is capable of producing inky black wine with sweet damson fruit and spicy mocha notes. We will also taste the beautifully aromatic Torrontes grape variety, grown in some of the world's highest vineyards, it is packed with soft rose petal notes and fresh apple flavours.
All tastings include; minimum of 6 wines sourced locally so you can find them easily if you like them, full tasting notes, tasting sheet, use of professional tastings glasses and nibbles.
