Saturday Masterclass with Lunch: Napa Valley with Simon Woods
A Masterclass not to be missed! Join our favourite wine writer and presenter Simon Woods as he unveils our most luxurious and decedent tasting line up ever! This Napa Valley Masterclass is a must-book for any fans of fabulous Californian wine, and a fabulous opportunity for anyone who has always wanted to enjoy top wine from Napa but hasn't been able to afford to- our line up today would retail for around £800 if purchased in a shop! As we said, a tasting not to be missed! As with all of our Saturday Masterclass tastings, your day will include a beautiful 2 course lunch from the Ham & Friends kitchen.
After leaving a seemingly sensible career in IT in the 1980s, Simon Woods pursued his love of wine by travelling the world and immersing himself in all things vinous. Now Simon is best known for his quirky writing in books such as 'The World's Shortest Wine Book' and on his weekly blog. Simon is also a respected wine judge- he can be found marking the wines at International Wine Challenge, Decanter World Wine Awards and other prominent wine competitions. We love Simon's tastings at YWS because he still retains a passion and enthusiasm for wine which prompted him to make that career change nearly 30 years ago.
Our focus today are the illustrious wines of California's Napa Valley. Ever since the wine world was shaken up by the so-called 'Judgement of Paris Tasting' of 1976, the wines of the Napa Valley have been held in the same esteem and prestige as the finest of Bordeaux or Burgundy. Napa's finest reds are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, which enjoys the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean, covering the finest vineyards in a blanket of mist and fog, helping to retain the freshness and acidity in the perfectly ripe grapes. Look out for wines of huge complexity, perfect balance of tannin, acid and fruit, and long lingering flavours. Napa's best whites are made from Chardonnay; here the influence of Burgundy is evident. Traditional winemaking techniques like oak ageing, lees stirring and malolactic fermentations mean Napa Chardonnays have the same buttery texture and spicy oak flavours as the Cote D'Or whites of Meursault and Montrachet.
But Napa is about a great deal more than just French look-a-likes, expect to learn about wines which have the unmistakable streak of American style and charisma running through them. Exuberent wines which reflect the Californian culture of not taking things too seriously will also be the order of the day.
This promises to be a fascinating Masterclass hosted by a charismatic wine expert who will bring this fabulous wines to life. As with all of our Saturday Masterclasses, you'll taste at least 12 wines and enjoy a two course lunch in the middle of the day, provided by the Ham & Friends kitchen downstairs. It should be an incredible day of wine tasting, we would love for you to join us!
