Saturday Masterclass: Portuguese Wines with Marta Vine
Join us as we explore one of the world's most under-explored wine gems: Portugal! We all know about Port, and many of you may have tried a Vinho Verde and then of course (for wine drinkers of a certain age) there's Mateus Rose... But what else do you know about Portuguese wines? This is the tasting to show you why YOU should be buying and drinking more wines from Portugal; you'll drink better and spend less!
Portugal is unusual in that it doesn't subscribe to the Franco-centric school of wine; that is to say, you won't find much made from Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc or other familiar (French) grape varieties. Instead, Portugal is the Wild West of the wine world- unchartered territory with indigenious grapes waiting to be explored and enjoyed- this Masterclass will help you saddle up and head out on that wine explorer's journey of discovery.
The fabulous thing about Portuguese wine is its diversity- from the light fragrant whites of the north, to the heady and heavy reds of the south, from gently sparkling whites and roses to the robust red fortified wines of Port- they really can do it all. The UK has historically been an important market for Portuguese wines- especially when our relationship with our French neighbours soured, we would always turn to Portugal to meet our wine needs. Today, Portugal occupies a very desirable position where its wines are widely available but nowhere near as expensive as those better known examples from France, Italy or Spain. In other words- Portuguese wine should definitely be on your list to get to know better if you love trying new things and have a keen eye for a bargain!
We'll roam far and wide in this Masterclass; we'll introduce you to varieties like Fernao Pires, Arinto, Castelao, Touriga Nacional and Loureiro. Begin with us in the north where cool Atlantic currents encourage wines of great freshness and fragrance, as we head south we encounter richer, robust and intense reds. We'll taste Portuguese sparkling wine and, naturally, we'll celebrate this country's incredible herritage of fortified wine- Moscatel, Port, Madeira. So much to enjoy on this Masterclass, we almost didn't know where to begin! Fortunately YWS's Laura can call upon the expertise and wise council of her friends Marta and Kevin who run the highly acclaimed Portuguese wine importing business called Marta Vine. Marta's own story is fascinating- a background in wine and cork production sowed the seeds of her love of wine, and a move to the UK in 2009 gave her the chance to bring the wines of her home country to the attention of wine drinkers up and down the UK. Marta now supplies local wine merchants like Latitude Wines and Ake and Humphris, but Laura has known her since pre-Yorkshire Wine School days when the two of them were first starting out in Newcastle together. Marta has kindly agreed to share some wines and expertise with us at the Masterclass, it should make for a fascinating tasting and we can't wait!
As with all of our Saturday Masterclasses, you'll be well fed as your day includes a beautiful two course lunch. As Marta would say, there is no better way to enjoy these beautiful wines than over a good meal, and that will be a special part of this day.
