NEW: Orange Wines Paired with Cheese (Leeds)
Over the last couple of years we have been astonished at the seemingly unending popularity of our wine and cheese evenings. In a bid to keep our offerings fresh and fun we've even put on specialist nights which matched specifically white wine or red wine with cheese, as well as our very exciting Fortified Wines with Cheese night. We've had so much fun with these that we've decided to put an even more adventurous twist on our cheese and wine evenings by introducing an Orange Wine and Cheese evening. Curious? Read on to find out more!
So-called 'Orange Wines' have been becoming more popular in recent years and we have shown a few at the Wine School from time to time. They are wines made from white grapes which have been fermented on the skins (which is the way you would usually extract colour from red grape skins to make red wine), which results in a slightly deeper colour to the wine and a hint of bristling tannin. This period of skin contact also changes the sort of flavours which you get from the wine- think less fresh and fruity and more pungent, earthy and spicy. They are serious wines which, we've discovered are really bought to life when paired with food. You have the acidity of a white wine, but the structure and complex flavour of a red; this couldn't be more perfect to be matched to cheese!
This cheese and wine evening is definitely for the wine adventurer- don't expect to see Rioja and Manchego on our tasting tonight! But if you have already been through our more conventional wine and cheese evenings, or if you are fascinated by the current trend to more unusual and 'Natural' styles of wine, this is the tasting for you!
