Our exceptionally popular Saturday Masterclass series continues with a look at the staggeringly good wines of South Africa. For so long South African wine has been overlooked in favour of more fashionable regions like New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. Associations with cheap bulk wine and vineyards plagued with disease haven't helped RSA's image and that's why we need the expertise of YWS's Richard Kilian to help uncover the gems that many wine-drinkers are missing out on!

Far from being a 'New' World wine producing country, South Africa has a long, proud and illustrious history of winemaking, dating back nearly 500 years, when they were proud exporters of fine sweet wines to European royalty. Today, a generation of young winemakers are exploiting the opportunities which are available in these post-apartheid times, garnering influences and experiences from the rest of the wine making world whilst celebrating their own viticultural heritage.

The stars of the South African wine scene are Pinotage for reds and Chenin Blanc for whites- grape varieties which the South African's have pretty much made their own. Obviously we will be tasting fabulous examples of both of these grapes. But our host Richard has loftier ambitions to introduce us to less famous South African wines... as well as working for Yorkshire Wine School, Richard runs his own business importing miniscule quantities of artisanal wines from South Africa. His passion for the wines of this country is infectious, there is no greater guide to the under-explored wines of this region. So be prepared to taste incredible vintage fizz, as good as many Champagne, or how about Sauvignon Blanc which gives Marlborough a run for its money? Or red blends which go toe to toe with the best that Rhone or Bordeaux can offer?

South Africa really can do it all, and Richard is the person to prove it to you! We hope you can come and join us for a splendid days tasting.
