Virtual Northern Italian Fine Wine 3 wk Course

It's here!! Yorkshire Wine School's inaugural virtual wine course, delivered direct to your phone/tablet/laptop via everyone's new best friend, Zoom! Laura has been hard at work learning how to use Zoom to bring you the very closest to the usual Wine School experience that she can. Log on every Saturday night to watch Laura deliver her usual presentation (complete with holiday pics!) we'll be using Google Earth to bring the vineyard into our classroom, we even have a food and wine matching session hosted by a Master Sommelier... Of course, no Wine School session would be complete without tasting and we've even managed to sort out a great deal for you all in that department! Teaming up with Great Western Wine we have organised for the wines for the tasting to be delivered direct to your door for free! We've all missed socialising and hopefully you've all missed Wine School... here's where we start it up again!

For our first (of many!) Virtual Wine Courses we've picked a YWS favourite- the wines of Northern Italy- and we are going to explore some incredible regions and taste some stunning wines....

Week 1: Veneto a look at the more traditional wines and the classical vineyard areas of the region; although the Veneto is the site of much of the inexpensive and mass produced Pinot Grigio and Prosecco which has put Italian wine on the map, it is also a place of great authenticity and incredible terroir.

Prosecco today is almost ubiquitous in the UK, the go-to wine for many Friday nights, it's an easy-drinking fizz with plenty of fruity flavour which comes in at an affordable price. But there is far more nuance and range of quality than that stereotype would suggest. Join us as we explore the hillside vineyards where Prosecco was born, as a wine with depth, flavour complexity and a touch less of the sweetness than you might be used to! Next up, we look at the Valpolicella region before there was Amarone; before the practice of drying and intensifying grapes was discovered, producers in Valpolicella used to age their wine in traditional chestnut and cherry wood casks. Many people ask us if wines are ever aged in wood which isn't oak and the answer is usually "no, it's pretty much just oak", well travel back in time with us and taste a wine aged the old-skool Northern Italian way!

Week 2: Gastromic Whites with Eric Zweibel MS a taster of some of the region's lesser known white wines which are exceptionally good when paired with food.

We are INCREDIBLY excited to be collaborating with Decanter World Wine Awards Judge, Master Sommelier and previous winner of Best Sommelier in the UK, Eric Zweibel as we host an evening of glorious food and wine pairing! We'll be working closely with Eric to produce some recipe cards for all the students to prepare dishes at home that will perfectly pair with your wines tonight. Then you just need to settle down with your food for the start of the lesson when Eric will join us live to answer your questions and explain the principles of pairing wine and food together. Given that there are fewer than 270 Master Somms in the world, we are incredibly privileged to be welcoming Eric to join us tonight!   

Wines to be tasted: Gewurztraminer Alto Adige and Puiatti Archetipi Ribolla Gialla

Week 3: Piedmont a night to revel in arguably Italy's greatest wine producing region, located at the foot of the mountains and home to iconic varieties such as Moscato and Nebbiolo, there's no better place to end our adventure...

A pair of wines to tantalise the tastebuds; we'll kick things off with a delicate aperitvo classic of Moscato D'Asti, filled with scrummy grape and peach delights, and we'll round things off with a heavyweight tasting of a stunning Barolo produced by the head of the Barolo Consortium, Matteo Ascheri. A night of extreme contrasts, much like the region itself, you'll learn how the wide diurnal range produced by the mountainous landscape allows Piedmont to produce wines of delicate floral aromatics, all the way through to the boldest and most intense reds. 

Wines to be tasted: Fontanafredda Moscato D'Asti and Ascheri Barolo

  • 3x 2 hour Zoom presentation from Laura on the wines of Northern Italy, including slides, tasting notes, photos etc
  • 1 hour optional 'post presentation' drinks with Laura, to socialise with each other, continue the conversations, ask questions etc
  • recipe cards written by Su (YWS's very own in-house professional chef) to pair the wines of each evening with the perfect food, yours to keep, you can cook up a storm in preparation for each evening of the course, or use at your leisure to enjoy with leftovers of wine the next night
  • discount code to use to purchase the wines to taste along with 
  • exclusive taste along with MS Eric Zweibel
  • ask questions and interact with Laura and Eric using 'hands up' or Zoom chat function
  • each session will be recorded and stored for a week, if you can't make the session live, simply request a copy of the recording and watch in your own time
  • £45 is price PER DEVICE to log on, no more than two people per device
