Virtual Northern Spain Fine Wine 4wk Course

It's here!! Yorkshire Wine School's second virtual wine course, delivered direct to your phone/tablet/laptop via everyone's new best friend, Zoom! Laura has been hard at work learning how to use Zoom to bring you the very closest to the usual Wine School experience that she can. Log on every Friday night to watch Laura deliver her presentation (complete with the usual holiday pics!) we'll be using Google Earth to bring the vineyard into our classroom, we even have Meet the Winemaker evenings where you can ask your questions face to face! Of course, no Wine School session would be complete without tasting and we've even managed to sort out a great deal for you all in that department! Teaming up with Great Western Wine we have organised for the wines for the tasting to be delivered direct to your door for free! We've all missed socialising and hopefully you've all missed Wine School... here's where we start it up again!

Many of you have the enjoyed the treasures of Laura and Simon's numerous trips to Ribera del Duero and Rioja; the Wine School team's love of Tempranillo and the beautiful landscapes of Northern Spain have produced some of our favourite courses and masterclasses (including the one we are all looking forward to rearranging... Laura's Greatest Ribera Cellar!), so why not take advantage of the flexiblity of our new virtual format by bringing some of our Spanish friends in to your living room to share our wine journey all together?

Week 1: Catalunya

Although Catalunya is a vast and varied region, producing wines of all colours and styles, we return again and again to two in particular. Cava is one of the world's most underrated fizzes, the best are packed with deep, mellow biscuity flavour and share an elegance and complexity with Champagne. They are characterful wines which often speak of the Xarel-lo grape, incresingly alongside Chardonnay, they are also moving to a drier style which makes Cava a much more refreshing choice than the weightier Champagne and the sweeter Prosecco. Next up it's reds and there is no finer red in this region (and possibly no finer in the whole of Spain) than Priorat, these bold reds which combine Garnacha and Carinana speak of wild red berries and deep earthy complexity. They are wines which, at their best can be elegant and refined, but are always bold and powerful.

Meet the Maker Session with Franck Massard; we are thrilled to welcome Franck to our Zoom tasting this evening, and can't wait for him to do a fabulous Q&A with all of our students. Franck was working at North Yorkshire's Middlethorpe Hall when he won the title of UK's Best Sommelier in 1996. Since then Franck has started a new life out in Catalunya, and he now makes some of the regions most exciting wines. Named by Naked Wines as their Winemaker of the Year in 2013, Franck has made an incredible journey from Somm to Cellar Master! We can't wait to taste his wine and chat with him tonight. 

Week 2: Rioja

No Spanish course would be complete without a Rioja night, but rather than do a predictable Crianza vs Gran Reserva we've decided to shine a light on wines we believe to be some of the best coming out of the region at the moment. Rosado! Northern Spain's great secret! These wines are well made, packed with juicy fruit but boast a crisp dry finish. The trend right now might be for the pale and super-restrained Provence style of pink, but we just love these more gastronomic, fuller bodied styles. Next up, one of an increasing number of limited edition bottlings which the bodgea are releasing to get around minimum ageing requirements for the usual Crianza, Reserva, G Reserva etc. These wines usually undergo a certain amount of oak ageing, but the winery selects special parcels of fruit to be set to one side and tries to match the oak and the ageing to that fruit. It's a more bespoke process which results in more expressive and unique wines. 

Wines to be tasted: Ramon Bilbao LaLomba Rosado and Ramon Bilbao Edicion Limitada

Meet the Maker Session with Rosana of Ramon Bilbao; it's always an honour and a pleasure to do a Meet the Maker session, but we are especially interested to gain some insight in to the winemaking philosophies at Ramon Bilbao. Far from sticking to the tried and tested Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva recipe, Ramon Bilbao have constantly sought to innovate, experiment and add new winemaking skills to their repetoire. Tonight is a case in point- a super premium rosado, priced at a level to compete with Provence, and a highly limited, shorter aged, premium Tempranillo which conforms to non of the aforementioned Rioja norms. We look forward to glorious wines and a fascinating insight in to modern vs traditional Rioja with Rosana. 

Week 3: Green Spain 

A step in to the comparative unknown! Whilst Spain is well-known in the UK for bold red with plenty of heft and oak, what often flies under the radar is the poised and mineral-filled whites which come from the Atlanic coast. We'll be looking at two grape varieties- Hondarribi Zuri and Treixadura- which we hope will be firsts for most wine schoolers but we are sure will bring a wave of new fans to this unique corner of Spain.

Week 4: Ribera del Duero

What a way to round off our Iberian Adventure! Back in Ribera to share some more amazing expressions of Tempranillo with you all. We'll start with an overview of the area, including a little of the history of winemaking in the region, and then we'll pay a visit to two bodega to offer a contrast of style and approach. First up we'll have a Meet the Maker session with Pago de Los Capellanes and taste their Crianza. This absolutely stunning bodega houses some of the most breathtaking cellars we've seen- almost cathedral like in their style and size. Next up we'll be tasting a special selection bottling from Abadia Retuerto; this groundbreaking producer craft a range of single vineyard 'Pago' wines from international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. They sit outside of the classifications of the Ribero DO and so must declassify their wines, but their influence on the region is undeniable. There wines are often incredibly hard to find in the UK, we are thrilled to be able to taste this one tonight.

  • 4x 2 hour Zoom presentation from Laura on the wines of Northern Spain, including slides, tasting notes, photos etc
  • 1 hour optional 'post presentation' drinks with Laura, to socialise with each other, continue the conversations, ask questions etc
  • recipe cards written by Su (YWS's very own in-house professional chef) to pair the wines of each evening with the perfect food, yours to keep, you can cook up a storm in preparation for each evening of the course, or use at your leisure to enjoy with leftovers of wine the next night

  • ask questions and interact with Laura and winemakers using 'hands up' or Zoom chat function
  • each session will be recorded and stored for a week, if you can't make the session live, simply request a copy of the recording and watch in your own time
