Superb Stellenbosch: A 2-part Online Fine Wine Encounter AND Meet the maker with Ken Forrester
A pair of online tasting evenings to warm the cockles this January; as restrictive measures remain in place and the gloomy weather means we want to huddle in the warmth somewhere, our stay-at-home wine tastings have never been more appealing! Journey with us to the warmer climes of the Western Cape and snuggle up with glass of something extremely delicious whilst we provide your dose of Wine School relief!
On a recent ‘Meet The Maker’ series we were charmed and honoured to make the acquaintance of Mr Ken Forrester. A legend of a man in wine-making circles, he is literally known as ‘Mr Chenin Blanc’! Ken was wonderful company; regaling us with stories of winemaker exploits, his fascination with the Loire, the inspiration behind his different wines- often a brilliant blend of classically inspired styles with an unmistakably South African execution. Ken’s top wines are the epic FMC Chenin Blanc (RRP £39.50) and utterly gorgeous Gypsy Grenache/Syrah blend (RRP £35). There are stories aplenty to share about both of these wines and we are so excited to welcome Ken back as we taste them all together.
Week two offers something a little different but equally exciting, we have managed to snaffle up a small allocation of the incredible Morgenster Estate Red (RRP £39.50) from the 2010 vintage. This Bordeaux Right-Bank-inspired blend of Merlot, Cab Franc, a touch of Cab Sauvignon and just a splash of Petit Verdot is absolutely singing at the moment…. A real treat to taste it in its tenth year, we know this is will brighten up your January evenings. We’ll be tasting it alongside the Estate White a barrel aged Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend (RRP £19.50), again inspired by Bordeaux but executed with Afrikaans pizazz!
On the second night we’ll be exploring a little bit more about the history of South Africa, particularly Stellenbosch, as a wine producing area. It’s a fascinating story, with many ties back to classic French wine regions. We’ll use Google Earth to get a sense of the unrivalled beauty of the Western Cape, all whilst comfortably sipping away on these delicious wines in your living room!
As with all of our online tastings we’ll share some goodies such as Su’s celebrated recipe cards, maps and tasting notes to help bring the Wine School experience direct to your home. It looks like we’ll all have to spend a few more months at home before the dreaded virus retreats, gift the wine lover in your life a little taste of Wine School this Christmas and let’s give ourselves something to look forward to in January!
